Tear gas and batons: Turkish security forces disrupt Pride parade again

Last weekend’s Istanbul Pride turned into a confrontation between the police and demonstrators. The event was officially banned, but like every year hundreds of LGBT+ people took to the streets.

It is slowly becoming an annual tradition: violence during Istanbul Pride. Since 2014, the annual Pride celebration in Istanbul has officially been canceled. The celebration was also banned this weekend because of the “protection of peace and safety, general health and morals”. The LGBT+ people and others who nevertheless took to the streets came face to face with a gathered police force who tried to end the demonstration with tear gas and batons. According to Euronews, at least 20 people have been arrested with or without violence, including a journalist.

Earlier this week, a Pride picnic was also banned and ended. The actions of the Turkish authorities are not new. In recent years, the LGBT+ community has come under increasing pressure. While thousands of people took part in the Istanbul Pride in the early 10s of this century, those numbers are now considerably lower.

LGBT+ rights are under pressure in Turkey. Although there is a certain acceptance among the liberal part of the Turkish population in the big cities, the government is exerting more and more repression. Also in universities, which have always been an oasis of LGBT+ acceptance, queer people are no longer as free as they used to be.

Polish minister wants to copy Hungarian anti-LGBT+ law

Surprise surprise! The Polish government is considering adopting Hungary’s controversial anti-LGBT+ law. If it is up to the Minister of Education, the law prohibiting the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality and transgender people to children under 18 will be literally copied into the Polish code.

Minister Przemysław Czarnek is known as a fierce opponent of the LGBT+ community. He once labelled a Pride parade as ‘vulgar and obscene’. So it’s no surprise that Czarnek is a big fan of the recent Hungarian measures. Homosexuality and transgender people should not be promoted, the minister believes. “We must adopt this law in its entirety,” he tells conservative platform Sieci.

The Justice Minister explained his stance to Reuters news agency: “While the rights of people of different sexual orientation must be respected, everyone should always remember what the most important value is: the best interests of the child in society.”

It is not the first time that the Polish government has been hostile to equal rights for LGBT+ people. For example, the government is trying to restrict adoption for gay couples and is accepting the ‘LGBT+ free zones’ that have popped throughout the country.

The European Union is highly dissatisfied with the Hungarian law. A large majority of government leaders are strongly against the legislation, with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte even going so far as to say that Hungary should leave the Union. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is now investigating how Hungary can be tackled. Hungary, on the other hand, is supported by countries such as Poland and Bulgaria.

Hungary to enact law against ‘’LGBT propaganda’’

Following Russia’s lead, Hungary will also implement a law banning LGBT+ propaganda: a measure that effectively silences the LGBT+ community. The political party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has written a bill to ensure that teaching about homosexuality and transgender people is banned in schools. Also, advertisements for people under the age of 18 must not contain references to the LGBT+ community. All this to “ensure the rights of the child”.

The new law is another step in the fight of the ruling Hungarian party Fidez against the LGBT+ community. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán already abolished the legal recognition of trans people and made sure that gay couples can no longer adopt children.

The new legislation goes yet another one step further. Officially, the law is aimed at paedophilia, but the law actually ensures that minors get as little knowledge as possible about transgender people and homosexuality. In advertisements aimed at minors, expressions of the LGBT+ community are banned and teaching on such topics is no longer allowed in schools either. The law also includes “pornography”.

Activists warn that the law is suspiciously similar to Russia’s anti-gay propaganda law. That law is also intended to limit expressions of homosexuality. According to LGBT+ activist and researcher Remy Bonny, it is difficult for LGBT+ people to campaign against the law, as it is promoted as a measure against paedophilia. “The democratic decline of the past ten years was actually a copy of what happened in Russia. LGBTI people are being used as scapegoats to dismantle democracy,” he says.

According to Bonny, the European Commission has contributed to this. “The silence and inaction against the Hungarian government’s crimes against the LGBTI community have allowed Hungary to continue its fight against human rights and democracy.”
